Different Varieties of Fish

When you choose to keep fish, you might at first be slightly overwhelmed by the choice you have in species. This article aims to outline the main options available to you, and explains the pros and cons of each fish type. You will find that each group of fish and their individual species will require different needs to sustain a healthy and happy life. The first step would be to go to your local aquarium shop and take a good look around at the different varieties available. The shop keeper should be able to advise you on the different needs and techniques needed. Obviously, a big part of your decision will be based on the appearance of the fish, but try to also allow some room in the decision making process for the needs of the fish. Can you cater for all their needs?

Keeping marine fish is often thought to be a lot harder than keeping freshwater tropical species. The truth is that they just have different requirements and tend to suffer from mistakes a bit more than freshwater fish do. If you know what you are doing, keeping marine fish should be no problem. The benefit of having a marine aquarium is that the species you have on offer are absolutely stunning. When choosing your fish, be aware that some species will be more aggressive than others, so be careful not to match the wrong fish together.

Freshwater tropical fish are very popular due to being a little easier to manage for beginners than their marine equivalents. Most aquarium stores will sell packages aimed at people who are new to keeping tropical fish, and typically these will come with the appropriate filters, heaters and lighting. Once again, the variety of fish you have on offer is quite large and there should be no difficulty in finding fish that you like. As with keeping any kind of fish, never rush into it and always think carefully about what fish you'd like, and how much space and time you can give them before you fill your aquarium up.

Coldwater fish have a slightly boring reputation thanks to the 'goldfish in a bowl' idea. However, this really isn't the case and you can find some really good looking coldwater fish that will eventually grow to quite a large size! As an example, Koi Carp are a fantastic breed of fish that come in many different colours and will last for many, many years. Coldwater fish do present their own challenges to fish keepers and it really isn't just a case of sticking a fish in a bowl and feeding it every day. As with all other types of fish keeping, a good understanding of basic water chemistry and the needs of you fish will go a long way to giving you fish a sustained life. Koi's for example must be fed a good and balanced diet and as the winter creeps in this diet must be changed to lower protein foods.
